oh come on, everybody knows there's no such thing as seasons at App. The joke (and it's only a joke because it's true) goes "if you don't like the weather, wait a few minutes." Only place I ever lived that went from sunny and 70 to raining and 40 to snowing and 20 in the same 24 hr period.Only time they canceled classes the entire 4 years I was there was when Hugo came through.

As the saying goes, "If you don't like the weather in Boone, wait 5 minutes......" It's possible to experience at least 3 out of the 4 seasons in one day.

Every year I couldn't wait for fall semester to enjoy the colors, cool mountain air, Mountaineer Football, and the overall vibe. Until winter where I had to walk from App South to what used to be Raley Hall (Kenneth Peaco*ck Hall now). Uphill in the snow. My daughter thought I was exaggerating the 20 mph wind and ice particles...she's a senior there now LOL

In support of transfer student success, App State has expanded its Aspire Appalachian program, securing new and renewed partnerships with 27 North Carolina community colleges, tripling the size of the program, which included only nine schools in the 2023-24 academic year. Aspire provides a streamlined path for students at partner community colleges to complete their degrees at App State.https://bit.ly/3WV578x

Desteney Greene is no stranger to what it means to be a Mountaineer. After working at App State’s Academy at Middle Fork as an exceptional children teacher and interim director of exceptional children, the decision to pursue her Master of School Administration at App State felt like a natural progression. For Desteney, App State was a safe place to grow, to ask questions and to exemplify what she always instilled in her mini-Mountaineers… integrity, kindness and excellence. Desteney also serves as an example to her daughters, who were able to watch their mom cross the commencement stage. Although this is Desteney’s third degree, this is the first commencement ceremony she has attended.

Like many Class of 2024 graduates, Francisco Martinez did not get to have a formal high school graduation ceremony four years ago, during Covid. Finally, in May 2024, Francisco got to cross the commencement stage for the first time, this time as a Mountaineer and a graduate of the Reich College of Education at Appalachian State University. Francisco’s reason for choosing App State, his journey throughout his time as a Mountaineer and his plans for his future all stem from his desire to help others and inspire change. Francisco majored in middle grades education with a concentration in mathematics and social studies. This fall, Francisco will begin teaching seventh grade math with the goal of ensuring that his students have a better school experience than his own and to help students enjoy math more.

North Carolina Sen. Ralph Hise is a native of Western North Carolina and grew up experiencing App State as a child, tagging along with his mom to the Boone campus while she completed her master’s degree at the university. Hise attended the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics and eventually came back to App State, this time as a student. Knowing that he wanted a strong academic program and to return to his roots, Hise only applied to one school… App State. His time at App State was heavily influenced and defined by his first-year experience in Justice Residence Hall (now the location of New River Hall). Today, the friendships he formed on the third floor of Justice Hall are still going strong, and they would ultimately become one of the reasons he was influenced to go into politics. Hise is currently serving his seventh term as senator of North Carolina’s 47th District and co-chairs the Appropriations/Base Budget Committee, the Redistricting and Elections Committee and the Joint Legislative Oversight Committee on Information Technology. He is also serving his third term as the Senate’s Deputy President Pro Tempore. During his legislative tenure, App State has received significant increases in operating funds and capital expenditures. Hise sees himself as the biggest fan of Appalachian State University and wants to make sure that all of North Carolina knows where Boone is and that App State continues to grow in prominence.https://bit.ly/4do0Tvc

Each year, the Appalachian Alumni Association celebrates alumni excellence. This year, the association honored three Mountaineers for their outstanding accomplishments and their exemplary commitment to the success of App State students – past, present and future. One of these awards is the Outstanding Service Award, which recognizes individuals for their exceptional service to the university. Steve Wilks is the recipient of the 2024 Outstanding Service Award and a member of the Class of 1992, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in communications. You likely recognize Wilks from his time in the NFL as a coach for the San Diego Chargers, Carolina Panthers, Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns and the San Francisco 49ers. Wilks was a member of the App State football team from 1987 to 1991 and transitioned from player to coach in 1995. Coach Wilks spent several years coaching collegiate football and eventually returned to App State as a defensive backs coach. On and off the field, Wilks is a leader who gives back to his local communities. He is the driving force behind the 3T Foundation that aims to support and increase positive outcomes for youth. He also established the Steve and Marcia Wilks Scholarship that supports App State student-athletes to further their education with a graduate degree and an internship with the Yosef Club. To learn more about Wilks and why he received the 2024 Outstanding Service Award, watch his video below! https://lnkd.in/e-STbDu4

We like to think of LinkedIn as the social media equivalent of the family refrigerator, often covered with art work, good grades, awards and all the things we're most proud of. We're adding this to the GIANT App State fridge: More than 7,600 undergraduate students were named to the Chancellor's or Dean's List for spring 2024. These achievements speak to the hard work and dedication of our Mountaineers: The students, the faculty who teach and mentor them and the staff who support their academic success. Congratulations to all! Let's do it again this fall semester. Have something you'd like to post to the family fridge? Add it in the comments below! 📌 To learn more about the Chancellor's and Dean's Lists and to see the full lists of recipients, visit https://bit.ly/3OH0LOy.
